Mars-the Red Planet

when we heard the name "mars", we started thinking of a red, dusty planet and of course ALIENS!! Mars is the nearest planet from earth. Mars is a dead-red planet, dead because of not supporting life on it. Some scientists thought that once mars were having the necessary conditions to support life.

Mars is the planet that we humans believed to be our new home. Innovator cum businessman Elon Musk has a dream to have a human colony on Mars, and NASA also has plans for humans on Mars.

The red planet is been the favorite subject of sci-fi writers and sci-fi movie writers.  Some famous sci-fi novels on the red planet are The Martian by-Andy Weir, Red Mars by- Kim Stanely Robinson, The Martian Chronicles, etc.. Some sci-fi movies on the red planet are The Martian, John Carter, The last day on Mars, Red Planet, etc..

Let's have some Red planet facts...

  • Mars is the third planet from the sun, situated 213 million km from the sun.
  • It took 11.7 minutes for sunlight to reach the red planet.
  • The length of the year on Mars is 687 Earth days.
  • Mars is 1.9 times smaller than Earth.
  • It also has polar ice caps, canyons, and mountains.
  • It also has a thin atmosphere made up of Carbon Dioxide, Argon, and Nitrogen.
Mars is one of the most explored planets in the solar system. Many space agencies send their satellites and rovers on it to explore the red martian dust and thin Martian atmosphere. It is not having its magnetic field so it is not shielded from the solar winds and cosmic radiations. If humans want a colony on it then it must be in martian lava tubes which can protect us from that deadly radiations.

The first satellite that reaches the red planet is the Mariner-4 by NASA reaches mars by 15 July 1965. Since then there are many countries that tried mission to the red planet but only a few countries are successful in their effort, these are India (the only country which got success in the first attempt), U.S.A., Russia, and Europian Union.

The most amazing mission that I think is Mangalyaan from ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation). It is successful in its first attempt. The whole budget of it is cheaper than the Hollywood sci-fi movie The Martian. It is an orbiter mission launched using PSLV-XL rocket from Sriharikota, the spaceport of India. It is launched on 5 November 2013, reached the red planet on 24 September 2014.
